OEC Refresher Cycle B

Fast approaching is OEC Refresher Cycle B

November 10th, 2012
8:00am – 4:00pm
Sun Valley Sawtooth Room

Station A: Musculoskeletal anatomy and injuries to the pelvis, hip, and femur including traction

Station B: Case study, review and discussion of scenarios in refresher workbook

Station C: Nervous system anatomy , C spine injuries, helmet removal, standing backboard

Station D: cold, heat, altitude injuries; lifts and drags

Station E: Gastrointestinal and genitourinary anatomy and injury, evisceration

Station F: Allergies, anaphylaxis , plant and animal injuries

Bring your refresher workbook. If you did not receive one this summer, go to http://www.nsp.org and download please.

VERY important STUFF!

Hello everyone,

Nice to finally have a chill in the air!

We have some GBSP events coming up that I’d like you to know about and I hope you can participate in.

The yurt desperately needs firewood. We would like several people to help with wood splitting, stacking, and hauling. If you have a chainsaw or ATV/ATV trailer, bring it, or donate it for the cause. Poster has offered to dump a pile of wood off the highway if we can haul it up there. Wow! Thanks Brian! This event will be on Saturday October 27^th. We will meet at the YMCA parking lot at 8:30am if you’d like to ride-share. If nothing else, bring your leather work gloves and sustenance for the day. BTW, if you use the yurt, you should be there!
We need to have a Fall meeting. This is usually early November, but I’m swamped till mid-November. I’m temporarily suggesting Wednesday November 14^th^,, unless any active members object. Place and time to be determined.
Mountain Symposium. I don’t know too much about this yet, but it will be the evening of November 17^th. Word on the street is that we should set up an informational table for recruitment. We will need people to help with this. I’ll send out more info when I get it or if anyone else knows, send it my way.

REMINDER! The OEC Refresher day is November 10^th.

“Candidate” to “Patroller”

Many people have asked how to upgrade their status from “Candidate” to “Patroller”.

In order to do this, one must take the OEC course AND also do a mountain overnight, which involves sleeping in a snow cave among other things.

If you are already eligible to become a Patroller, and your card does not state “Patroller” please contact me ASAP.
If you have done the OEC and would like to do the overnight please contact me soon.
If you are bothered by the fact that you didn’t receive your NSP Member card last year, I cannot help with that. Apparently, there was a problem at NSP getting their cards out last year.It’s not the end of the world—we still like you and you are still part of our group. You’ll likely get one this year after you pay your dues.

Support Baldy/Galena Repeater System

Hey Everyone, just wanted to let all of you know to mark the date Saturday Nov 10 for the fund raiser/party to support the Baldy/Galena repeater system. This is a potluck, BYOB event.

As you know this repeater system is funded entirely by donations. This summer saw the repeater system used a number of times for back-country rescue when it was the only communications.

The party starts at 6:30 pm at the Sweetwater community center in Hailey. We are planning live music and a raffle with a lot of swag including a new RADIO!!!! If you can raise any donations (restaurant gift, back-country gear, fun event tickets,whatever etc. please email me and I will pick up).

There will be a testing for general and tech license at 5:30 before the event. So if anyone wants to test now is the time to study, study, and study!!! And then study more!!

We will also have on hand to view a custom built roll up wire antenna (cost $22) for your handheld that works great. We have tried it out on a number of events and in the SNRA with great results. All of you back-country guys should have one in your backpack. Thanks again for your support.

Yurt NEEDS..

Hello everyone,

There are some items that the yurt needs, if you take any of the items in please “comment” on this post of what you took in.

The hut needs:
PT-1.5 rolls left
hand sanitizer-purel-the type that does not need water
coffee
butter
syrup

The hut has already:
box of dried potatoes
1/2 keg of heineken
TP-lots
hand soap and dish soap
1 jar spaghetti sauce
spaghetti noodles
tea
coffee filters
box of wine
1/2 bag of pancake mix
mix for chili-needs tomato paste
newspaper

The sides of the kitchen shelves are splitting. The pieces of wood for the shelves are 3/4in x 1 3/4 in x 6 ft? just the trim around the shelve is splitting. It looks like they had been replaced in the last few years, but they are splitting again.

This is a wonderful fundraiser put on by Tim and Trytje East for Rotarun operations, and news this year. A Galena Backcountry Ski Patrol Fund will be set up to help raise $ for a scholarship for someone to attend the OEC certification class next Fall.

Director Yurt Work Day Notes

Hello Fellow Patrollers!

Many Thanks to all who were able to attend the Yurt Workday on Saturday and Sunday October 24th and 25th.

Special Thanks to Gene Korby, Shaun Murray and Rick Allington for spending Saturday replacing archway post supports for the bunks and splitting wood for the stoves. Their timing was perfect – had they not split the wood Saturday, a dozen of us would have spend a wet, windy and uncomfortable Sunday trying to split, stack and store wood in blowing snow. Instead, we were warm and cozy inside the yurt installing the liner. The installation had some challenges with seams and velcro not in alignment with structural ribs – however, clever solutions prevailed spontaneously in the field and the patrol team on site used materials at hand to successfully adjust and install a spiffy, bright white new liner – yippee! We’re basically restocked except for paper towels we forgot and although there were insignificant mouse signs, the dishes are all bleached clean anyway! Gene and Shaun took additional measurements to replace wood structural pieces for the kitchen counters. The canine crew that patiently and faithfully stood guard outside the yurt in the blowing snow included Miracle, Sammy, Granite, Betty-Cocker and my good-old-pal Bailey. All is well at the yurt site and the best news is we left tromping through about 4 inches of fresh, moist snow – should make a nice base for the season to come!

Thanks to Brian Dirks and Mark Sills for advice in advance on how to install the liner from inside the yurt without having to take off the cover!
Thanks to Bruce Smith for AGAIN hauling heavy yurt parts into site on his frame pack!
Thanks to Gene Korby, Shaun Murray and Rick Allington with his Wiley-dog for rebuilding and replacing cracked bunk supports, splitting wood for all and taking measurements to repair kitchen counters!
Thanks to Patti for helping me bleach, dry and store all the kitchen dishes!
Thanks to Jay Dorr, Mike Hipsher, Kathy Bennett, Maureen and Peter Pressley, Mike Ward, Bruce Smith, Gene Korby and Shaun Murray for creatively installing the yurt liner!
Thanks to Jeff Ford for providing child care so I could carpool and hang out with Jay and Patti Dorr!
